MANILA – The Department of Justice (DOJ) will send a Philippine team to the Czech Republic to settle legal matters surrounding the return of former Ako Bicol party-list lawmaker Zaldy Co.
Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida said the government remains assured that due process is being observed, with several legal strategies underway to secure Co’s repatriation.
According to Vida, efforts to bring Co back began in November 2025, following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Sandiganbayan against the former House appropriations committee chair.
He also clarified that Co is currently in the custody of Czech authorities, countering speculation suggesting otherwise.
Co, identified as a key figure in alleged fraudulent flood control projects and irregular budget allocations, was apprehended in Prague last week after reportedly crossing into the country without proper documents.
With three arrest warrants already issued, Vida said it will be up to the Sandiganbayan to decide where Co will be detained once he is returned to the Philippines.
He added that all factors will be weighed fairly, underscoring that the court will ultimately determine Co’s detention and that no preferential treatment will be given.
