MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday reminded parents to closely supervise their children’s activities and peer interactions, following a school-related security incident in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.
Authorities reported that a Grade 7 student was found carrying drug paraphernalia and a knife during the first day of classes on June 8. The student was later brought to the barangay hall and referred to a reformation center for intervention.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said parents play a critical role in preventing youth involvement in illegal activities.
He said parental guidance is the “first line of defense” in ensuring children’s safety, in coordination with schools and other stakeholders.
The police chief also ordered an investigation into the incident to determine responsibility and identify other persons involved.
Nartatez emphasized the importance of parental engagement both at home and in children’s daily interactions.
He added that the PNP will continue supporting school safety initiatives and programs that protect students and teachers.
Local police units have been directed to strengthen coordination with schools and local governments, enhance early intervention efforts, and maintain police visibility around campuses to deter potential threats.
