MANILA – Authorities are now investigating the defacement of the Senate website, with the Philippine National Police (PNP) vowing to identify and prosecute those behind the cyber intrusion.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to analyze how the breach occurred and to follow digital traces left by the attackers.
He said the incident, although not involving any compromised confidential data, is still considered a serious attack on a key government institution.
The PNP assured that it is coordinating with the Senate and other cybersecurity agencies to secure evidence, reinforce digital defenses, and track down those responsible.
The Senate’s EDP-MIS Bureau confirmed that the website was altered without authorization on June 11. Security protocols were quickly activated, and technical teams launched an investigation.
Officials clarified that the site only hosts publicly available documents and that no sensitive records were exposed.
A group calling itself “Nullsec Philippines” claimed responsibility online, framing the act as a protest against corruption and political dynasties.
Despite the claim, authorities maintained that unauthorized access to government systems is punishable under law.
Nartatez emphasized that “hacktivism” does not excuse cybercrime, warning that those responsible will face full legal consequences.
