MANILA – Four former leaders of the Senate have urged sitting senators to put an end to their internal leadership conflict and refocus on legislative work, stressing that political stability in the chamber is crucial amid national challenges.
In a joint statement, former Senate Presidents Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, and Franklin Drilon called on their successors to resolve the ongoing Senate leadership dispute in a swift and orderly manner.
The former officials emphasized that their appeal comes from a sense of responsibility to the institution they once led. They reminded current senators that leadership should be guided by service and institutional integrity rather than personal or political interests.
“The highest duty of a Senate President is not to cling to office but to leave the institution stronger, more respected, and more firmly bound to the rule of law than when he or she found it,” they said.
They also urged lawmakers to avoid heated public exchanges that could further damage the credibility of the chamber, recommending that disagreements be addressed in proper legislative forums instead.
“We call on all incumbent senators, regardless of bloc or affiliation, to de-escalate public rhetoric that demeans the Senate and weakens confidence in it… and to prioritize the urgent work before the Senate,” they added.
The appeal comes amid continuing tension following a recent Senate reorganization that triggered disagreements over leadership positions and committee control.
The group stressed that the issue must be resolved within constitutional processes and long-standing parliamentary rules.
They also warned that prolonged instability in the chamber could hinder the passage of important legislation, particularly on economic concerns, food and energy security, and justice issues.
