MANILA — Political tensions inside the Senate continue to escalate following reports of a possible move to oust newly installed Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano.
During a televised interview on 24 Oras, Cayetano alleged that some senators aligned with the majority bloc were being contacted and intimidated over plans to push for another change in Senate leadership.
Cayetano, however, downplayed the issue, saying political pressure is common in leadership battles. He also maintained that the majority coalition remains solid behind his leadership.
The current majority bloc, composed of 13 senators, backed Cayetano’s rise to the Senate presidency earlier this week, replacing Vicente Sotto III.
For his part, Jinggoy Estrada said the latest developments were expected, noting that supporters of the previous Senate leadership were still attempting to reclaim influence within the chamber.
GMA News said it has yet to receive comments from members of the minority bloc regarding the alleged efforts to remove Cayetano.
