MANILA, Philippines — Liberal Party chairperson and former senator Leila de Lima said former vice president Leni Robredo could consider a return to national politics if her improving survey numbers continue.
“Tatakbo siya kung lalong tumaas ang numero niya,” De Lima said, referring to Robredo’s possible comeback in future elections.
Both De Lima and Robredo are members of the Liberal Party, which has remained part of the opposition bloc since the end of the 2022 national elections.
De Lima’s statement comes amid renewed public discussion on Robredo’s potential electoral plans, following recent survey results showing a notable rise in her voter preference ratings in hypothetical 2028 matchups. In recent polling figures released by OCTA Research, Robredo climbed in rankings among early presidential contenders, narrowing the gap with Vice President Sara Duterte, who continues to lead nationwide preferences.
The surveys also indicate shifting voter sentiment, particularly in urban centers and key vote-rich regions, where Robredo has seen gains. Analysts note that a large undecided voter base remains, leaving early 2028 projections highly fluid.
Robredo, who served as vice president from 2016 to 2022, has not declared any intention to seek national office. Since leaving government, she has focused on local governance as mayor of Naga City and has been involved in various civic and community programs in Bicol.
Despite persistent public speculation and encouragement from some allies, Robredo has repeatedly emphasized her focus on local service, while avoiding formal commitments regarding future national elections.
As of this writing, neither Robredo nor the Liberal Party has issued any official confirmation of a planned 2028 candidacy, though De Lima’s remarks have added fresh attention to ongoing political discussions within opposition circles.
