SANYA, China — Dhenver John Castillo gave the Philippines a boost in its campaign at the 6th Asian Beach Games after securing a silver medal in sailing’s boys’ foil windsurfing competition on Tuesday.
The decorated SEA Games gold medalist added another podium finish after placing second in a closely fought contest at Sanya Bay Haihong Square, helping sustain the country’s position at third overall in the medal standings.
The Philippine delegation, supported by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission, remained behind regional rival Thailand and host nation China. As of Tuesday, the Philippines held three gold, three silver, and two bronze medals.
Castillo tied on net points with Thailand’s Wachirawit Thonup after 13 races but settled for silver based on the final race outcome, with one heat cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
The Filipino windsurfer acknowledged the challenge of competing against Asia’s elite athletes, describing the event as a major learning opportunity while expressing gratitude to his support system.
Elsewhere, Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 continued its strong showing as both men’s and women’s teams moved into the semifinals after convincing wins over India and Kazakhstan.
In contrast, the Philippine beach wrestling squad endured early setbacks, with only Abby Balisme managing a win in the opening round of the women’s 60kg division.
Meanwhile, Filipino sport climbers failed to advance past qualification, as all entries placed outside the cutoff for the finals across both men’s and women’s categories.
