MANILA — The Philippine National Police is examining possible failures in oversight after two of its personnel were arrested for allegedly taking part in the illegal transport of mineral ores in Misamis Oriental.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the case raises serious questions about accountability within the ranks, particularly since the officers were caught operating beyond their jurisdiction. He noted this may indicate unauthorized off-duty work as escorts.
The arrest took place on April 27 at a checkpoint in Barangay Limonda, Opol, where authorities stopped a utility van carrying six individuals. Seized from the vehicle were 58 sacks of suspected unprocessed ores valued at around PHP290,000, along with firearms and ammunition issued to the police officers.
The group reportedly failed to produce documents authorizing the transport of the mineral materials, leading to charges under existing mining laws.
The two officers, assigned to the Monkayo Municipal Police Station in the Davao Region, have been immediately relieved of their duties. Both now face administrative proceedings for grave misconduct on top of criminal complaints.
Nartatez reiterated the PNP’s policy against misconduct and said supervisors may also be investigated if negligence is established.
The Internal Affairs Service has been directed to carry out a full inquiry to determine whether the incident is linked to a broader network within the police organization.
