MANILA — Members of the House Committee on Justice on Wednesday rallied behind four colleagues implicated in a criminal complaint filed by lawyer Manases Carpio, reinforcing their collective stance amid ongoing impeachment proceedings.
During the continuation of hearings on the case against Vice President Sara Duterte, Manila Rep. Joel Chua proposed that the panel formally adopt a unified expression of support for Reps. Gerville Luistro, Leila de Lima, Perci Cendaña, and Chel Diokno.
He underscored that lawmakers are shielded by parliamentary immunity, stressing that their actions fall within their official responsibilities.
With backing from Deputy Speaker Paolo Ortega V, the motion was swiftly approved, formalizing the committee’s collective support.
The issue arises as legal tensions escalate between the panel and individuals linked to the Vice President, particularly following disclosures of financial documents connected to the Anti-Money Laundering Council during the inquiry.
Cendaña suggested the complaint was meant to intimidate lawmakers after significant financial details emerged. Meanwhile, Diokno asserted that the panel’s actions were fully compliant with constitutional provisions, describing the case as a diversion from the main issues.
De Lima also viewed the complaint as part of broader legal tactics aimed at sidetracking the impeachment process, citing earlier petitions filed before higher courts.
