MANILA — National Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag has challenged former congressman Mike Defensor to substantiate his accusations by bringing them before the proper authorities.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Matibag said Defensor should file charges against his wife, Laguna Representative Ann Matibag, if he truly has evidence linking her to alleged corruption in flood control projects.
The NBI chief likewise said Defensor is free to pursue legal action against him if he believes the bureau is engaging in harassment or political persecution against his family.
Matibag maintained that investigators have gathered compelling evidence tying Defensor to suspected human trafficking operations connected to the Chicago KTV Bar and the Bleu Hotel, which authorities say is owned by members of the former lawmaker’s family.
An NBI operation carried out on April 21 at the KTV establishment led to the rescue of 54 female victims.
Responding to Defensor’s criticism, Matibag said resorting to insults does not weaken the evidence being presented by authorities. He added that involving relatives in alleged illegal activities reflects poor judgment.
Earlier this week, the NBI confirmed it is preparing to file qualified human trafficking charges against Defensor.
