MANILA – Efforts to manage the fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill received a boost after an access road to the site was completed, enabling the arrival of heavy equipment.
According to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the finished road now allows machinery including backhoes, bulldozers, dump trucks, and dredging equipment to be brought in to assist in minimizing smoke emissions.
The equipment has been stationed in Barangay Tanza 2 to address the spread of toxic smoke, which has affected residents in Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Bulacan.
The fire, which started on April 10, has disrupted several communities in the vicinity.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon had earlier visited the landfill, facilitating the deployment of equipment. He added that the agency is considering sourcing additional dredgers from private firms to strengthen operations.
