MANILA, Philippines — A landmark of Philippine sports is preparing for a new chapter as the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium undergoes a major facelift ahead of Manila’s hosting of the East Asia Cup 2026 this December.
The century-old sporting complex’s baseball venue will welcome teams from six nations from December 7 to 13, with the Philippines serving as host alongside visiting squads that include Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand.
Presented by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the regional tournament will mark an important occasion for Philippine baseball as the renovated stadium prepares to serve as a venue for international competition and a showcase for sports tourism.
Since opening in 1934, the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium has stood as part of the country’s sporting heritage. Its latest transformation seeks to retain that legacy while providing facilities that meet the demands of contemporary baseball.
PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio said the priority is to complete the improvements promptly and bring the stadium to international standards.
The project includes retrofitting the grandstand to accommodate up to 10,000 spectators, installing a digital scoreboard on the historic outfield wall and laying all-weather artificial turf designed to meet international specifications.
Gregorio said the undertaking goes beyond physical improvements, emphasizing the need for a venue that can serve both the sport’s historical significance and its future development.
“This is about giving Filipino baseball a true home worthy of its history and future,” he said.
The East Asia Cup 2026 will be staged immediately after the renovation is completed, according to the project announcement. The Philippine Amateur Baseball Association (PABA) will organize the competition under the sanction of the Baseball Federation of Asia (BFA).
For PABA Secretary General Mike Asuncion, the upgraded facility could help strengthen the country’s standing in regional baseball by giving local athletes a venue suited for high-level competition.
“This renovation is a turning point for Philippine baseball,” Asuncion said.
He added that hosting the regional tournament in an upgraded stadium would inspire Filipino players and demonstrate the country’s commitment to competing at the highest level.
Beyond the competition itself, the event is expected to draw regional attention to Manila as a destination for international sporting events. Hosting visiting teams and their supporters also presents an opportunity to generate tourism activity around the tournament.
The stadium’s facelift, meanwhile, underscores the importance of investing in sports facilities that can accommodate international events while preserving historic venues.
As the Philippines prepares to welcome its regional rivals in December, the revamped Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium is poised to become a focal point for the East Asia Cup and a renewed symbol of the country’s ambitions for baseball.
