MANILA — Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian has backed calls for Filipinos to prepare for possible water supply disruptions as the country braces for the expected Super El Niño, endorsing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s advice to collect rainwater before shortages emerge.
Gatchalian said the recommendation to prepare buckets was practical, citing irregular rainfall despite the ongoing rainy season.
“He’s right. His suggestion is practical because of the El Niño phenomenon. It should be the rainy season now, but we’re seeing rain that comes only sporadically. So, it’s important that we be prepared,” Gatchalian said in a DZRH interview on Tuesday.
He added that households should prepare for possible water interruptions in various parts of the country.
Marcos issued his advice during an interview in Singapore on Sunday, urging Filipinos to collect rainwater whenever rainfall occurs.
“Part of those public service messages will be to collect rainwater. Buy buckets now so that when it rains, you can collect as much water as possible,” the President said.
The call for household preparation comes amid concerns over the potential impact of Super El Niño on water availability. Gatchalian’s remarks underscored the importance of anticipating possible supply disruptions as rainfall remains sporadic.
Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte did not directly address the President’s bucket advice when asked about it on Monday. She reiterated her earlier statement that “we can’t rely on the president.”
