MANILA, Philippines — Rainy weather will continue to affect parts of the Philippines on Monday, particularly the Visayas and Mindanao, as the trough of Super Typhoon Choi-Wan remains the dominant weather system affecting the southern portion of the country.
The state weather bureau said scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected over Mindanao, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, Leyte and Southern Leyte.
PAGASA warned that moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall could result in flash floods and landslides, especially in communities prone to such hazards.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon are expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. Similar weather conditions are forecast over the rest of the country.
As of 3 a.m. Monday, Choi-Wan was outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, about 2,605 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon. The powerful cyclone had maximum sustained winds of 195 kph and gustiness of up to 240 kph and was moving northward at 20 kph.
PAGASA said the tropical cyclone itself is not directly affecting the country, but its trough is enhancing rainfall over parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.
For Tuesday, isolated to scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms are expected to persist in several areas, while other parts of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies.
Residents are advised to remain alert for sudden heavy rains and follow local warnings on possible flooding and landslides.
