MANILA — Heavy rains continued to affect large portions of the country on Thursday as the southwest monsoon (Habagat), enhanced by Tropical Storm Maymay (international name: Kujira), brought widespread showers, thunderstorms and the threat of flooding in several areas.
The state weather bureau warned that Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA and parts of the Visayas may experience periods of moderate to heavy rainfall that could trigger flash floods and landslides in vulnerable communities.
PAGASA also maintained flood advisories for Metro Manila and several nearby provinces as rivers and waterways remain at risk of overflowing due to continuous rainfall. Residents in low-lying and mountainous areas were urged to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of local disaster management officials.
The weather disturbance also prompted the suspension of government work and classes in Metro Manila and several provinces on Thursday as authorities sought to minimize risks from severe weather conditions.
Forecasters said cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rains are expected to persist over the next several days as the southwest monsoon continues to draw moisture across much of the country.
