SIARGAO ISLAND — The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) is stepping up efforts to reinforce Siargao’s position as one of the country’s premier travel destinations by financing the continued rehabilitation of Sayak Airport, a major infrastructure project expected to accommodate the island’s growing tourism industry.
The airport modernization forms part of TIEZA’s Institutionalized Infrastructure Program, which supports key tourism facilities nationwide to improve accessibility, visitor experience, and regional economic growth.
Officials said the rehabilitation will upgrade airport facilities, increase passenger-handling capacity, and improve operational efficiency as both domestic and international arrivals continue to rise following the tourism sector’s strong recovery.
The investment is expected to provide a significant boost to Siargao’s tourism-driven economy, where thousands of residents depend on hotels, restaurants, transport services, surfing schools, tour operations, and other visitor-related businesses for their livelihood.
TIEZA emphasized that modern and efficient transport infrastructure remains critical in sustaining tourism growth, particularly for island destinations like Siargao that rely heavily on air connectivity.
The airport improvements complement the Department of Tourism’s broader campaign to promote Siargao not only as the country’s surfing capital but also as a leading destination for eco-tourism, island hopping, diving, culinary tourism, and adventure travel.
Government officials expressed confidence that the upgraded airport will encourage more airlines to expand services to Siargao, making travel more convenient for both local and foreign tourists while generating new investment opportunities across the island.
Beyond strengthening tourism, the project is also expected to create jobs, stimulate local businesses, and support long-term economic development in Surigao del Norte.
With continued government investment in tourism infrastructure, Siargao is poised to further solidify its reputation as one of the Philippines’ world-class island destinations, offering improved accessibility and a better overall travel experience for visitors from around the globe.
