TACLOBAN CITY — Two of Leyte’s most celebrated island destinations will temporarily close to tourists this July as local governments undertake annual environmental rehabilitation and maintenance efforts aimed at preserving their fragile marine ecosystems.
Authorities announced Monday that Kalanggaman Island and Canigao Island will suspend public access for several days to allow nature to recover while infrastructure and tourism facilities undergo repairs.
The Palompon Eco-Tourism Office said Kalanggaman Island will observe its annual “Island Holiday” from July 5 to 11, halting all tourist trips and overnight stays.
During the week-long closure, personnel and volunteers will conduct beach cleanups, habitat conservation activities, waste management initiatives, and repairs to facilities to ensure the island remains one of the country’s premier eco-tourism destinations.
Local officials have also encouraged environmental advocates and volunteers to participate in the rehabilitation activities by coordinating with the municipal tourism office.
Meanwhile, Canigao Island will be closed from July 1 to 15 under Municipal Ordinance No. 04-2023, which requires a yearly 15-day environmental break dedicated to ecological restoration and infrastructure maintenance.
The Matalom Municipal Tourism Office said entry to the island will be prohibited for local and foreign tourists, tourism operators, and fishermen throughout the closure, except during emergency situations. The island is scheduled to reopen on July 16.
Tourism officials stressed that the temporary shutdowns are essential in protecting coral reefs, marine habitats, and coastal ecosystems that continue to draw thousands of visitors each year.
The annual rehabilitation program reflects the commitment of local governments to balance tourism growth with environmental sustainability, ensuring that Kalanggaman and Canigao remain among Eastern Visayas’ most pristine island destinations for generations to come.
