MANILA — The Philippines collected 30 medals, including 13 golds, at the recently concluded Singapore Youth Archery Championships, highlighting the country’s growing strength in the sport.
According to a Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) news release on Thursday, the 21 athletes who competed in the tournament paid a courtesy call on PSC Chair Patrick Gregorio and Commissioner Edward Hayco at the commission’s office in Manila.
The team was joined by five coaches and five officials as they presented the medals won in the competition.
Gregorio said the results reflect the resurgence of Philippine archery and commended the athletes for their outstanding performance against regional rivals.
The national squad is being trained by South Korean mentors Ryu Su Jeng and Hong Sung Chil, both highly accomplished figures in international archery.
World Archery Philippines head Bing Reaport expressed optimism that the latest achievements could help restore the country’s prominence in the discipline.
“It’s time to bring back the glory days of Philippine archery. This is for the country,” he said.
The three-day championship gathered competitors aged 18 and below from several countries, including China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Laos, and the Philippines.
