MANILA — Filipino tennis standout Alex Eala and Czech partner Nikola Bartůňková saw their Wimbledon women’s doubles run come to an end after absorbing a three-set defeat to eighth-seeded duo Sofia Kenin and Jeļena Ostapenko, 6-3, 3-6, 1-6, in the tournament’s opening round.
Eala and Bartůňková looked poised to pull off an upset after producing a composed and energetic performance in the opening set. The pair converted key break opportunities while limiting unforced errors, allowing them to seize the early advantage against the decorated opponents.
The match took a different turn midway through the second set as Kenin and Ostapenko found their rhythm. The experienced partnership increased the pressure with stronger returns and more aggressive net play, enabling them to level the contest.
The deciding set belonged entirely to the eighth seeds, who quickly established control behind consistent serving and powerful groundstrokes. Eala and Bartůňková struggled to regain momentum as Kenin and Ostapenko completed the comeback to book their place in the next round.
Despite the loss, Eala once again proved she can compete alongside established names on one of tennis’ biggest stages. The young Filipina has continued to make significant progress on the WTA Tour, building valuable Grand Slam experience that is expected to strengthen her development in both singles and doubles competition.
The doubles exit came after a busy schedule for Eala, who also competed in the singles draw, underscoring the physical and mental demands of playing multiple events during one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments.
