MANILA — House prosecution panel head Gerville ‘Jinky Bitrics’ Luistro on Thursday called on Filipinos to unite in prayer as the Senate prepares to open the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte next week.
The appeal came during the Mass for Truth, Justice and Accountability celebrated at the Chapel of the Nativity of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City, where lawmakers, private prosecutors, clergy, and supporters gathered ahead of the start of the trial.
Luistro expressed gratitude for the prayers offered for the House prosecution team, saying that public support strengthens their resolve despite the challenges they face in carrying out their responsibilities.
She emphasized that prayers should extend beyond the prosecution panel, encouraging Filipinos to also include the defense lawyers, the senator-judges, and the entire nation so that the proceedings would be guided by truth, fairness, and the common good.
Joining the Mass were Representatives Leila de Lima, Lorenz Defensor, Joel Chua, Ysabel Maria Zamora and Kaka Bag-ao, together with private prosecutors Lorna Kapunan and Marforth Fua.
During his homily, Msgr. Mel David described the impeachment proceedings as an important moment for the country, saying the search for truth and accountability carries significance beyond the courtroom.
He urged the prosecutors to remain steadfast and rely on faith, noting that wisdom and moral courage are essential in carrying out their role.
The impeachment complaint against Duterte, endorsed by 257 lawmakers on May 11, accuses her of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes.
The Articles of Impeachment include allegations involving the alleged misuse of PHP612.5 million in confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery involving education officials, and public threats directed at President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.
The Senate is set to convene as an impeachment court on Monday to begin hearing the case.
