MANILA — Thousands of supporters from Negros Occidental on Sunday formally launched the “Risa Na” movement in Bacolod City, marking the first major grassroots campaign openly rallying behind Senator Risa Hontiveros’ possible bid for the presidency in the 2028 national elections.
Around 3,000 participants from various sectors gathered at Gonzaga Gym in Barangay Taculing to declare their support for Hontiveros, describing her as a leader who embodies integrity, accountability, and inclusive governance. Organizers said the movement seeks to build a nationwide network of volunteers who will champion reforms and encourage greater citizen participation in the electoral process.
Leading the launch, former Negros Occidental Board Member Mardi Mapa-Suplido of the Akbayan Citizens Action Party said the country is at a crossroads and requires leaders with unquestionable integrity, sound judgment, and the courage to uphold democratic institutions.
She urged Filipinos to reject candidates associated with political violence, corruption, and dishonesty, saying the next president must restore public trust in government.
“Hontiveros represents principled leadership,” Mapa-Suplido said, adding that the senator has remained independent of political dynasties and has maintained a public service record free from corruption allegations.
Former Magdalo Party-list Representative Gary Alejano likewise endorsed the initiative, emphasizing that the country deserves a leader committed to serving all Filipinos, particularly those marginalized by poverty and inequality.
“The time to prepare for the country’s future is now,” Alejano said. “Choosing the right leader begins long before election day.”
During the assembly, supporters signed a manifesto committing themselves to promote governance anchored on transparency, social justice, reliable public service, respect for human rights, and protection of free expression.
The manifesto also called for the establishment of “Risa Na” chapters across cities, municipalities, and barangays nationwide to strengthen grassroots organizing ahead of the 2028 elections.
The movement’s launch follows Hontiveros’ recent statement that she is seriously considering seeking the presidency after holding consultations with opposition leaders and allies regarding the next national elections.
Although the senator has yet to formally announce her candidacy, organizers said the campaign is intended to consolidate public support early and present what they believe is an alternative leadership founded on integrity, democratic values, and accountable governance.
