MANILA — South Korea pulled away in the second quarter and held off a spirited Philippine fightback to beat Gilas Pilipinas Girls, 86-70, Monday in the FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup Division A at Karisma Arena in Seremban, Malaysia.
The Filipinas stayed within striking distance after the opening period, trailing 18-17. South Korea then seized control in the second quarter, outscoring the Philippines, 30-15, to establish a 48-32 lead at halftime.
Gilas came out firing after the break and won the third period, 21-18, reducing the deficit to 13 points, 66-53. But South Korea refused to let the Filipinas get any closer, matching their 17-point output in the fourth while scoring 20 to secure the victory.
Rhiane Perez carried the offensive load for the Philippines with 21 points and six rebounds. Ruiza Olmos delivered 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Grace Curley posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Tiffany Reyes finished with 11 points.
The result left Gilas at 0-2 in Group A following its 102-47 opening-day defeat to defending champion Australia.
The Philippines is competing in Division A for the first time after gaining promotion from Division B in 2024.
Gilas will close its group campaign against New Zealand on Tuesday, still chasing its first victory of the tournament.
