MANILA — Police temporarily took custody of a 14-year-old girl from Leyte after she allegedly posted an online threat against a school, prompting authorities to investigate amid heightened concerns following the recent Tacloban City shooting.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla disclosed during a media briefing on Thursday that the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) traced the post after receiving information from Sen. Bam Aquino.
The social media message reportedly warned of an impending disturbance at a school in Tolosa and hinted at possible acts of violence involving firearms or bladed weapons.
Based on a report submitted by the CIDG, Remulla said investigators believe the threat is no longer active. Nevertheless, law enforcement officials moved quickly to prevent any potential risk and ensure public safety.
After being taken into custody, the minor was referred to the Department of Social Welfare and Development. She was eventually released, as existing provisions of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act prevent criminal charges from being filed against her.
This is a developing story.
