MANILA — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has marked a significant milestone in Philippine agricultural exports after facilitating the first-ever direct shipment of Guimaras Geographical Indication (GI) mangoes to Europe through the Port of Iloilo.
The export initiative, carried out under the leadership of Customs Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno, is being hailed as a major achievement for the country’s agricultural sector and a testament to the growing global recognition of premium Philippine produce.
The inaugural shipment consisted of 100 kilograms of high-quality Guimaras mangoes, which were dispatched to Europe via Belgium before being distributed to markets in Germany, France, Spain, and the Netherlands.
Nepomuceno commended the Port of Iloilo, led by District Collector Noli P. Santua Jr., for ensuring the efficient processing of the cargo and strict compliance with international trade and customs requirements.
“This milestone demonstrates the capability of Philippine agricultural products to compete in the global marketplace and satisfy stringent international standards for quality and food safety,” the BOC said in a statement.
The successful export highlights the increasing demand for premium Philippine fruits abroad and underscores the importance of coordinated efforts among government agencies, exporters, and local producers in expanding overseas market access.
Building on the success of the shipment, the Port of Iloilo is also pursuing plans to establish a regular direct air cargo export route from Iloilo International Airport to Hong Kong. The proposed route is expected to provide faster market access for agricultural products from Western Visayas, including the world-renowned Guimaras mangoes.
Trade officials believe the initiative will open new opportunities for farmers and exporters, enhance the competitiveness of local agricultural products, and strengthen the region’s position as a key contributor to the country’s export industry.
The BOC said the achievement reflects the government’s continuing efforts to streamline export processes and support local industries seeking to expand their presence in international markets.
With global consumers increasingly seeking high-quality tropical fruits, officials expressed optimism that the successful entry of Guimaras mangoes into Europe will pave the way for larger export volumes and broader market penetration in the years ahead.
The breakthrough is expected to generate greater economic opportunities for growers, create additional income streams for local communities, and further elevate the reputation of Philippine agricultural products on the world stage.
