WASHINGTON D.C. – Economic ties and regional cooperation took center stage as Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday, focusing on expanding collaboration under key bilateral and multilateral initiatives.
A major point of discussion was the Luzon Economic Corridor, a trilateral project involving the Philippines, the United States, and Japan, designed to attract investments and enhance infrastructure development in northern and central Luzon. The corridor is also being linked to plans for a proposed high-tech industrial artificial intelligence hub.
The US State Department said Rubio reiterated Washington’s commitment to supporting the project and addressing energy-related challenges in the region.
He also underscored the enduring strength of the US-Philippines alliance, noting milestones such as 80 years of diplomatic relations and 75 years of formal alliance ties in 2026.
Lazaro said the discussions focused on strengthening economic diplomacy while reinforcing cooperation in maritime security and regional stability.
Both sides also exchanged views on security concerns in the South China Sea and broader developments in Southeast Asia, as well as the Philippines’ upcoming role as ASEAN chair.
Separately, Lazaro met with US Ambassador-designate Lee Lipton, who is set to begin his posting in Manila later this month.
