Demonstrators Oppose Tree-Cutting, Raise Concerns Over Environmental Impact
By Benjamin Cuaresma
MANILA — A group of young environmental activists staged a protest along a road construction site on Bataan Avenue on Friday, temporarily disrupting work as they called for the suspension of the infrastructure project.
The protesters positioned themselves in the middle of the roadway, urging authorities to halt the ongoing construction and reconsider its environmental impact.
According to the demonstrators, their primary concern is the removal of trees that they say help preserve the area’s natural environment and provide much-needed greenery. They argued that the project could contribute to the loss of vegetation and further environmental degradation.

The group also raised broader concerns over government infrastructure developments that they claim have led to deforestation and damage to mountainous areas in various parts of the country.
Due to the protest, construction workers temporarily paused their activities, including work involving the removal of center island structures, to give way to the demonstrators.
Police officers later arrived at the scene to monitor the situation. Authorities maintained a visible presence in the area but did not intervene, allowing the protesters to peacefully express their concerns.
No untoward incidents were reported during the demonstration.
The protest highlights the continuing debate between infrastructure development and environmental protection, with activists calling for sustainable solutions that balance economic progress with the preservation of natural resources.
As of posting time, project officials had yet to state the protesters’ demands.
