MANILA — With classes set to open on June 8, many Filipino families are facing the annual challenge of preparing for the new school year amid concerns over the cost of school essentials.
While prices of some school supplies remain relatively stable, the combined cost of uniforms, shoes, bags, notebooks, writing materials, and rain gear continues to place financial pressure on parents, particularly those with multiple children attending school.
School uniforms remain among the biggest expenses. Elementary uniforms typically cost between P150 and P180 per blouse, while high school uniforms range from P200 to P250 (depending on sizes ). Slacks can cost between P180 and P300 depending on the grade level and design required by schools.
Footwear is another significant expense. Synthetic leather black shoes are being sold for around P250 to P500 per pair, while waterproof rubber shoes range from P150 to P200. Socks are commonly sold at three pairs for P50.
Basic school supplies also contribute to back-to-school spending. Notebook bundles are priced between P120 and P250, while pencil cases cost from P70 to P120. Ballpens, crayons, glue, erasers, and sharpeners add further costs that can quickly accumulate for households preparing several children for the school year.
With the rainy season already underway, parents are also purchasing umbrellas and raincoats, which are being sold for around P150 to P160 each, adding another necessary expense to already stretched household budgets.
The issue comes as schools nationwide continue preparations for the opening of classes through Brigada Eskwela activities. While volunteers help clean and repair classrooms, many parents say the financial burden of school-related expenses remains one of the biggest challenges during the back-to-school season.
As the start of School Year 2026–2027 draws near, concerns over affordability and the rising overall cost of education-related necessities continue to weigh heavily on Filipino families striving to ensure their children are ready for the first day of classes.
