MANILA – Ateneo de Manila University basketball coach Tab Baldwin has publicly apologized and taken full responsibility following the deaths of two student-athletes, Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who drowned during a team activity in Aurora province. In a video statement posted Friday night on the university’s Facebook page, Baldwin said he was devastated by the incident and admitted he failed in his most important responsibility—protecting the welfare of his players.
He said the two young athletes were swept away by strong waves along the coast of Dipaculao during what was intended to be a routine training activity.
“I’m sorry to the depth of my being,” Baldwin said, stressing that coaches are entrusted not only with athletic development but also with the safety and well-being of their players.
Recounting the tragedy, he described how a situation that initially appeared safe quickly turned dangerous, leaving coaches and players scrambling to respond. Despite their efforts, the outcome could not be changed.
Baldwin also spoke of the emotional weight of the loss, saying he felt he had failed as a leader, mentor, and friend. He acknowledged the grief of the players’ families and the wider community, many of whom have expressed shock and criticism following the incident.
He urged the community to continue praying for the two athletes and to find a path toward healing and forgiveness in the aftermath of the tragedy.
The Ateneo coach was earlier seen attending a candlelight vigil on campus in Quezon City in honor of the fallen players.
Baterbonia’s remains have been flown to Davao City for a wake at Ateneo de Davao University before being brought to his hometown in Agusan del Sur for burial.
