Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno expressed confidence that the city is now better prepared for the rainy season due to the continuous flood control and rehabilitation projects being implemented by the local government.
In an interview with the Manila City Hall Press Club, Moreno said clearing operations in waterways, esteros, and drainage systems are ongoing to help minimize flooding in several parts of the capital.
According to the mayor, major improvements have already been made in the city’s water drainage system compared to previous years, giving residents hope that flooding will no longer be as severe in many areas of Manila.
Moreno also revealed that officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways assured the city government that infrastructure projects aimed at preventing flooding along major roads are now being fast-tracked.
At the same time, the mayor said water and electric concessionaires conducting road works in different parts of the city have also been instructed to complete their projects within the agreed schedule to avoid worsening traffic congestion and inconvenience to the public.
He added that various departments of the Manila local government remain on full alert to maintain cleanliness, order, and quick response operations as the rainy season approaches.
Meanwhile, Moreno assured the public that the Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center is fully prepared for the temporary closure of its emergency room as rehabilitation and upgrading works begin.
The mayor explained that hospital administrators already have contingency measures in place to ensure that patients affected by the temporary ER shutdown will continue receiving proper medical attention.
He stressed that the rehabilitation is necessary to modernize parts of the hospital and install updated medical equipment to further improve healthcare services for Manileños.
Moreno also confirmed that the northbound portion of the Dimasalang Bridge is currently undergoing rehabilitation to ensure the safety of motorists and commuters using the structure daily.
The city government is targeting the completion and reopening of the bridge before the UNDAS season to help ease traffic congestion in key areas of Manila.
