MANILA – Malacañang on Monday said reports of an alleged destabilization attempt involving retired military officials should be taken with caution, but stressed that any credible evidence must be investigated.
According to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, claims of recruitment within the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to undermine the government have long been circulating.
“This has been around for quite some time. Attempts to destabilize the President’s administration are not new,” Castro said in a briefing.
The statement followed Senator Panfilo Lacson’s disclosure of alleged moves by some retired officers to seize political power amid ongoing political tensions.
Castro maintained that while the Palace does not treat the reports as new, law enforcement and security agencies should act promptly if the allegations are verified.
“If proven true, the appropriate agencies should immediately conduct an investigation without needing further instruction,” she added.
