MANILA — Senate President Tito Sotto said the Senate could convene as an impeachment court on May 4, should the House of Representatives transmit the articles of impeachment to the upper chamber.
Sotto made the statement ahead of the House Committee on Justice’s further hearings on the impeachment complaint.
“Technically, we may convene by May 4—that’s when we are set to resume session. That’s just two weeks away,” Sotto said.
“If by May 4 we receive the articles of impeachment, we will immediately convene as an impeachment court,” he added.
May 4 marks the scheduled resumption of Congress sessions.
Sotto also assured that he would act promptly once the Senate receives the impeachment case.
“I will act on it with dispatch. Definitely forthwith. As soon as the Senate receives it, I will inform the body and refer it to the Committee on Rules,” he said.
However, no definite timetable has been set yet as the process remains with the House of Representatives.
“We have to wait for the decision of the House of Representatives on whether they find probable cause.”
