ROME – Pope Leo XIV marked his first Easter Mass on Sunday with a heartfelt appeal for hope, joy, and peace to prevail over human suffering and global conflicts. Speaking to more than 50,000 faithful at St. Peter’s Square, he described Easter as a celebration of life renewed and darkness overcome.
“Through Christ’s resurrection, we too are invited to rise anew,” the Pope said. He called Easter a beacon of hope that reaches into the most difficult corners of human experience, offering consolation to those weighed down by loss, hardship, or sin.
The pontiff emphasized that the joy of Easter is enduring, a light that guides humanity even in times of despair. While recognizing the challenges and weaknesses of human nature, he reminded the faithful that the resurrection represents the ultimate victory over darkness.
Peace remained central to his message. “Let the peace of Christ transform us, and let our voices rise in a heartfelt cry for reconciliation,” he said.
The Pope demonstrated this commitment during the Good Friday Way of the Cross at the Colosseum, personally carrying a wooden cross through all 14 stations, and continued the theme in his Easter Vigil homily at St. Peter’s Basilica. He spoke strongly against war, violence, and the exploitation of the weak, underscoring that true peace cannot exist where life is treated as expendable.
His words resonated against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, serving as a reminder that Easter embodies both renewal and a call to protect human dignity.
