MANILA — Authorities in Dupax del Sur, Nueva Vizcaya, have destroyed an estimated ₱20 million worth of marijuana plants in a remote mountainous area, dealing a significant blow to illegal drug operations in the region.
The anti-drug operation, led by Police Major Anthony Ayungo and Police Major Randy Velarde, was carried out on Tuesday, March 17, in Sitio Gunot, Barangay Kimbotan.
The plantation, spread across approximately 1,200 square meters of cultivated land, was discovered after police received intelligence reports about illegal cultivation in the area.
Joint operatives from the Dupax del Sur PNP, 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company, Provincial Intelligence Unit, and Provincial Drug Enforcement Group conducted a coordinated operation, trekking over an hour through rugged terrain to reach the secluded location.
Upon arrival, officers confirmed the presence of 10,311 fully grown and developing marijuana plants, many of which were already flowering and nearing harvest.
The plants were uprooted and destroyed on-site by burning, ensuring none could be recovered or distributed.
Authorities believe the plantation was well-maintained and deliberately cultivated, with signs indicating recent tending.
Despite the absence of suspects, efforts are underway to identify those responsible, with investigators gathering evidence and exploring leads to file charges.
The PNP has committed to increased monitoring of the area to prevent future cultivation attempts, emphasizing the significance of the operation in preventing a large volume of illegal drugs from reaching the market.
