MANILA — Alex Eala strengthened her growing reputation on the global tennis circuit after a solid showing at the prestigious Indian Wells Open in California, gaining both a significant financial reward and a boost in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
The young Filipina reached the Round of 16 in the WTA 1000 tournament, earning about $105,000 (roughly ₱6 million) in prize money. The tournament represents one of the most lucrative stops on the women’s tennis tour outside the Grand Slams.
Aside from the financial windfall, Eala also collected valuable ranking points that pushed her to a new career-best standing in the WTA rankings, marking another milestone in her professional career.
Her Indian Wells campaign included a notable win over American star Coco Gauff during the tournament, a result that further underscored the Filipina’s ability to compete with the sport’s elite players.
Eala’s run eventually ended against Czech player Linda Noskova, but the performance further strengthened her position in the world rankings and boosted her confidence heading into upcoming tournaments.
The 20-year-old is now expected to compete in the Miami Open, another major stop on the WTA Tour where she hopes to continue her upward trajectory and inch closer to the sport’s Top 20.
With steady progress in both ranking and performance, Eala continues to emerge as one of the most promising athletes in Philippine tennis history.
