MANILA — In a tragic turn of events, 32-year-old Filipina caregiver Mary Ann De Vera gave her life to protect her elderly patient during a missile attack in Tel Aviv, Israel on February 28, 2026. De Vera, who had dedicated years of service to caring for others in a foreign land, was fatally struck by shrapnel while guiding her patient to safety.
The news of her sacrifice has sent shockwaves of sorrow to her hometown of Basista, Pangasinan, where friends and family recall her warm smile and selfless nature. As her remains were laid to rest in the Philippines on March 14, 2026, the community came together to honor her memory and offer support to her grieving loved ones.
Expressions of sympathy and solidarity have poured in from world leaders, including Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who promised De Vera’s family financial assistance and a monthly stipend. The Philippine government, led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has also assured the family of all necessary assistance, acknowledging De Vera’s ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
The Department of Migrant Workers is now working closely with the De Vera family to facilitate the repatriation process and provide necessary support during this difficult time.
