MANILA — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called for stronger global cooperation to address armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, and migration issues during his address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
At the UN headquarters in New York City, Marcos urged nations to pursue a ceasefire and diplomatic solutions in conflict-affected areas such as the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan, the Sahel region, and Myanmar.
The President emphasized that international law and humanitarian principles must guide actions in times of war, stressing the need to safeguard civilians and protect vital infrastructure.
He said the international community must work together to ease the suffering of populations caught in armed conflicts, noting that humanitarian assistance must reach those in need without restrictions.
Marcos also underscored the role of migration in global development, describing migrants and seafarers as vital contributors who strengthen connections between nations.
He urged governments worldwide to uphold the rights and dignity of migrant workers and support international initiatives that promote safe and orderly migration.
In addition, the President sought international backing for the Philippines’ candidacy for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.
Marcos said the Philippines is prepared to play a constructive role in addressing global challenges, citing the country’s decades-long involvement in UN peacekeeping missions.
Since the 1960s, thousands of Filipino troops have served in missions across Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and the Asia-Pacific region, helping maintain stability and assist local communities.
If elected, Marcos said the Philippines intends to represent the perspectives of developing and climate-vulnerable nations while promoting balanced and community-focused peacekeeping approaches.
The Philippines previously served on the Security Council four times, most recently from 2004 to 2005.
