
PUDTOL, Apayao – A critically endangered Cantor’s giant softshell turtle was rescued in Barangay Capanikkian and is now under the care of DENR’s CENRO in Calanasan.
Weighing 10 kg and measuring 47 cm, the turtle was accidentally caught by a local fisherman and voluntarily handed over to the authorities. Experts noted the turtle was carrying eggs, confirming that the species continues to reproduce in the Apayao River.
The Cantor’s giant softshell turtle, also known as the frog-faced softshell, is classified as endangered by the IUCN and listed as threatened under Philippine law. This sighting marks the first documented appearance of the species in the Apayao River, highlighting the river’s rich biodiversity and the importance of community efforts in wildlife conservation.
