MANILA – The Philippines will prioritize peace education and strengthen multi-sectoral partnerships as it takes the helm of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR) Advisory Board for 2026, government officials announced.
According to the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), the country aims to advance initiatives that promote dialogue, inclusivity, and regional understanding.
OPAPRU Executive Director Andres Aguinaldo Jr., the incoming chair of the Advisory Board, said these efforts go beyond formalities, describing them as strategic necessities for fostering lasting peace in ASEAN.
“Investing in peace education prepares future ASEAN citizens to approach conflicts with tolerance and constructive problem-solving,” Aguinaldo explained.
He noted that collaboration with universities and civil society organizations could bridge the gap between policy decisions and local realities, while dialogue continues to serve as ASEAN’s strongest instrument for consensus and neutrality.
On March 5, Aguinaldo and Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. met with Indonesian Ambassador I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja, Executive Director of ASEAN-IPR, to discuss final preparations for Aguinaldo’s presiding role at the 18th Advisory Board Meeting in Jakarta on April 8.
Galvez underscored the importance of ASEAN-IPR’s peacebuilding programs, reaffirming OPAPRU’s commitment to supporting the Institute’s ongoing and future initiatives.
