MANILA – The National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) has tasked the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) with investigating a social media post showing a 57-year-old bedridden grandmother allegedly subjected to abuse.
According to the NCSC, its Ilocos Region office is working with NBI Region 1 to promptly investigate the incident and protect the victim, who previously experienced a stroke.
“The abusers must face legal consequences for their actions,” the commission said.
NCSC Chairperson Ma. Merceditas Gutierrez explained that elder abuse often goes unreported because it happens behind closed doors and is sometimes inflicted by relatives or caregivers.
She called on lawmakers to expedite bills that enhance protections for senior citizens and emphasized that safeguarding the elderly is a responsibility shared by the entire community.
The commission also reminded the public to report neglect or abuse against seniors to ensure their well-being and safety.
