MANILA — Authorities are preparing for possible demonstrations on March 11 as supporters of former president Rodrigo Duterte mark the anniversary of his arrest and detention in The Hague.
Philippine National Police chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said Monday that online monitoring has detected calls for a large-scale motorcade organized by Duterte supporters.
Initial information suggests the convoy may pass through Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) before concluding at Villamor Air Base. The activity is intended to highlight the former leader’s first year under international custody for alleged crimes against humanity.
Nartatez said the police force is closely tracking developments and working with local government units to ensure security and prevent any disturbance to daily activities.
He reiterated that the PNP recognizes the public’s right to express their views through peaceful protests, but emphasized that maintaining order and safety remains the police force’s responsibility.
To prepare for possible gatherings, additional police personnel are being deployed across Metro Manila and Davao City.
The PNP chief also reminded officers to practice restraint and strictly follow legal protocols in dealing with demonstrators, while encouraging protesters to remain orderly and cooperate with authorities to avoid unnecessary conflict.
