MANILA – A new nationwide initiative to uplift the quality of teaching is set in motion as the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Budget and Management (DBM) signed a Joint Memorandum Circular on Monday establishing Teacher Education Excellence Centers (TEEC).
Education Secretary Sonny Angara, who also chairs the Teacher Education Council (TEC), emphasized that the TEECs will serve as a major boost to the professional growth of teachers.
“These centers will provide our educators with advanced training, resources, and innovative tools to improve teaching standards throughout the country,” he said.
Functioning as research and innovation hubs, TEECs will implement evidence-based teacher development programs, update curricula, and incorporate modern technology into the preparation of educators.
Beneficiaries include pre-service and in-service teachers, school leaders, and teacher educators. The centers will also accommodate child development workers, student tutors, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) trainers, multigrade teachers, and education deans.
The initiative will initially be implemented in six Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) through Memoranda of Understanding with TEC. These institutions are Philippine Normal University-Manila (NCR), University of the Philippines-Los Baños (South Luzon), University of San Carlos (Visayas), Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (Northern Mindanao), Caraga State University (Eastern Mindanao), and Cotabato State University (BARMM).
With TEECs in place, DepEd aims to create a more capable, innovative, and resilient teaching workforce to meet the demands of modern education.
