MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has reinforced its internal counter-intelligence mechanisms as part of the government’s push to protect state institutions from foreign infiltration.
PNP chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the move follows the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure that government agencies remain secure and resilient against external manipulation.
According to Nartatez, the police organization is taking steps to safeguard operational plans and sensitive information related to law enforcement and national security.
“Our priority is to ensure that confidential information concerning peace and security remains protected and that the PNP is shielded from any form of foreign interference or recruitment,” he said.
The PNP chief noted that the recent admission of Filipino nationals linked to foreign-driven espionage activities has underscored the importance of strengthening internal safeguards.
“This development reminds us to remain vigilant and continue promoting professionalism in the police service, guided by patriotism and loyalty to the country,” he added.
The National Security Council reported that three Filipino suspects arrested in connection with an alleged Chinese-linked espionage network admitted gathering sensitive data.
Authorities said two of the suspects had worked within the Department of National Defense and the Philippine Navy, while another had access to a member of the Philippine Coast Guard.
Although the suspected espionage network has been dismantled, Nartatez said the PNP will maintain heightened vigilance.
He added that the police force is strengthening coordination with the National Security Council and other intelligence bodies to improve information exchange. A confidential reporting system has also been set up to allow personnel to report suspicious activities.
Nartatez likewise supported the initiative of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the NSC to reinforce legal and institutional measures that will help address evolving security threats, especially those linked to rapidly advancing digital technologies.
