MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is set to seek international backing for the Philippines’ campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council during his upcoming working visit to the United States, the DFA announced Friday.
According to Assistant Secretary Angelica Escalona, Marcos will speak before a special session of the UN General Assembly on March 9 and 10, underlining the Philippines’ long-standing contributions to multilateralism, sustainable development, and human rights.
“The President’s address will focus on how the Philippines has consistently promoted international cooperation, peacekeeping, and the protection of vulnerable groups since the UN’s creation in 1945,” Escalona said during a media briefing at Malacañang.
Escalona stressed that a UNSC seat would give the country a stronger platform to influence matters affecting national interests, from maritime sovereignty to the welfare of overseas Filipino workers.
The Philippines has previously held a non-permanent seat in 1957, 1963, 1980–1981, and 2004–2005, while its peacekeepers have participated in 21 UN operations. The elections for the 2027–2028 term will be held in June 2026.
The DFA also noted that the Philippines is evaluating a proposal to join a “Board of Peace,” a concept earlier suggested by Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez.
