Manila – The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) on Wednesday advised national athletes to limit travel to the Middle East as regional tensions intensify.
PSC chairman Pato Gregorio recommended that athletes only undertake trips to the area for essential purposes, highlighting the risks posed by ongoing conflicts.
“Given the worsening situation in the Middle East and its potential impact on air travel and transport networks, the PSC strongly discourages non-critical overseas trips for athletes, teams, and sports personnel,” Gregorio said.
Several athletes have already faced travel disruptions. One example is the Philippine chess squad at the Russian Chess Crown Standard A Tournament in Moscow. Bronze medalist Mark Bacojo and his teammates were delayed when their flight from Abu Dhabi was canceled due to UAE airspace closures.
With the PSC’s quick coordination, the team managed to secure a return flight on Tuesday. The National Chess Federation of the Philippines expressed thanks to PSC officials, including Chairman Gregorio, Commissioner-in-Charge Edward L. Hayco, Executive Assistant Anna Faye Lee, and Executive Director Atty. Guillermo B. Iroy, for their support.
Gregorio further urged national sports associations to reconsider upcoming international trips. “All travel plans should be evaluated based on necessity and safety. The PSC continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide guidance as needed. Protecting the welfare of our athletes is our foremost concern,” he said.
