MANILA – Malacañang has called on government offices to reinforce security and remain alert following the discovery of espionage activities in the country allegedly linked to Chinese intelligence operations.
In a statement released Thursday, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said security agencies have already taken steps against individuals identified through the government’s Insider Threat Program, which monitors potential internal risks to sensitive government information.
Castro urged public officials and employees to be more vigilant in protecting government data and ensuring that confidential information is not exposed or misused.
“The Palace is reminding all government personnel to stay cautious and attentive,” she said.
She added that offices must strengthen safeguards for sensitive documents and systems to prevent them from being compromised by individuals who could threaten national security.
Earlier, the National Security Council described the case as a major national security issue, noting that Filipino citizens were allegedly recruited to conduct espionage operations on behalf of Chinese intelligence services.
Authorities said the covert activities have already been halted, with suspects arrested through coordinated counterintelligence operations.
The NSC declined to reveal details about the identities of those involved, as well as operational methods and timelines, citing national security concerns and ongoing investigations.
“Appropriate actions have been taken against the individuals concerned, all of whom are Filipino nationals who have admitted their involvement in espionage activities and are cooperating with authorities,” the council said.
The arrests were carried out under the government’s Insider Threat Program, designed to protect critical infrastructure and classified information from foreign espionage and undue influence.
The NSC also appealed to lawmakers to prioritize the passage of the Anti-Espionage Bill and the Anti-Foreign Malign Influence and Interference Act, measures aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to counter covert foreign interference.
