MANILA, Philippines — A law firm representing Ramil Lagunoy Madriaga said Wednesday that its client is prepared to defend himself following a perjury complaint reportedly filed by Vice President Sara Duterte over statements contained in his sworn affidavit.
In a press statement issued by Palad Lauron Palad & Te Law Firm, counsel for Madriaga confirmed that they had received reports about the complaint and stressed that their client stands by the statements he made under oath.
The lawyers emphasized that perjury is a grave criminal offense and should not be used to threaten or silence individuals who provide testimony on matters of public interest.
“Mr. Madriaga maintains the truthfulness of his affidavit and is fully prepared to defend it before the appropriate authorities,” the firm said.
According to the statement, a perjury charge requires strict legal standards to be proven, including showing that a statement is false, material to the case, and made with deliberate intent to deceive.
“These are legal elements that must be supported by clear evidence, not speculation or public rhetoric,” the lawyers added.
The firm also pointed to the timing of the complaint, noting that Madriaga’s affidavit was executed and notarized on Nov. 29, 2025 and submitted in connection with impeachment proceedings.
They raised questions about why the complaint was filed only recently, saying the public may examine whether the move is a legitimate legal action or a response to sworn testimony that raised significant issues.
Madriaga’s legal team also stressed that their client remains entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence as he faces allegations in other matters.
They added that personal attacks in public discussions should not replace efforts to address the substantive issues raised in the affidavit, particularly those related to the use of confidential funds.
The law firm said Madriaga executed the affidavit in good faith and based on information he believed to be accurate.
The lawyers expressed readiness to respond to the complaint in the proper legal forum, where they said the case would be resolved based on facts and evidence.
