MANILA, Philippines — The 2026 Shakey’s Super League Unity Cup opened with a celebration of collegiate women’s volleyball as 17 teams from the UAAP and NCAA gathered at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
The opening rites brought together athletes from the two major collegiate leagues, providing an early glimpse of the competitive field that will vie for the Unity Cup championship.
The participating squads took part in the opening parade, highlighting the tournament’s objective of bringing together schools with long-standing rivalries through competition and sportsmanship.
Dr. Ian Laurel, chairman and president of ACES Athletic Events and Sports Management Inc., said the SSL has become a platform where student-athletes can compete at a high level while building relationships beyond the court.
“This tournament is built on the spirit of unity,” Laurel said. “It gives our student-athletes a grand platform to showcase their dedication, hard work, and love for the sport.”
For SPAVI CEO Vic Gregorio, the tournament also plays a role in developing the next generation of women athletes.
Gregorio said the organization takes pride in supporting young players and helping promote values such as discipline and teamwork through sports.
SSL ambassador Shaina Nitura, meanwhile, called on the participating players to make the most of the opportunity and demonstrate the fighting spirit associated with their respective schools.
“Patunayan natin na ang volleyball ay nagkakaisa sa ating lahat,” Nitura said.
The Unity Cup now moves into the competition proper, with the 17 participating teams set for a series of matches that will determine which squad emerges as the tournament champion.
