MANILA — Security preparations are underway for the Philippines’ hosting of the 49th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in November, with the Philippine National Police (PNP) assuring the government of its readiness to protect delegates and the public.
Palace Press Officer and Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said the police are coordinating with concerned agencies and local government units to ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct of the high-level regional meetings.
“The Philippine National Police is ready to secure the 49th ASEAN Summit this November 2026,” Castro said during a Palace briefing.
She said the security effort will cover participating heads of state, foreign and local delegates, guests and members of the public who will be in areas affected by the summit activities.
Castro added that the PNP is working with government partners to identify potential threats and put response measures in place.
“The PNP assures the public that we are taking this responsibility seriously. We will remain alert, professional, and ready to help ensure the safe, peaceful, and orderly conduct of the Summit,” she said.
The Palace statement came amid questions over possible demonstrations by groups opposed to some visiting leaders or their policies, including potential protests should US President Donald Trump attend the summit.
Castro said the Marcos administration respects the right of Filipinos to express their opinions and raise grievances.
“Ang nais ng Pangulo iparating sa ating mga kababayan na ang inyong karapatan na manawagan, magsabi ng inyong hinaing ay karapatan. Hindi po ito ipinagbabawal,” she said.
At the same time, the government continues to prepare security measures intended to keep the summit safe and orderly while allowing legitimate public expressions to take place.
