MANILA — Police authorities in General Santos City have placed a 15-year-old student under the care of social workers after he allegedly posted online threats against a school, authorities said Wednesday.
The student was taken into protective custody amid heightened concern over school security following another shooting incident at a school in Banga, South Cotabato.
Police said the minor was traced through cyber patrolling and digital investigation after authorities monitored a Facebook account allegedly used to send messages threatening students, teachers, school personnel and security guards.
Police Regional Office 12 director Brig. Gen. Alan Manibog said the online messages also reportedly contained demands involving three students, prompting concern among members of the school community.
“Every online threat is serious, especially if it could cause fear and put our schools at risk,” Manibog said.
Personnel of the General Santos City Police Office’s Police Station 3, together with the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 12, conducted an operation at the Barangay Apopong hall after confirming the alleged threats.
The operation was carried out with the assistance of barangay social welfare personnel and the City Social Welfare and Development Office.
Authorities later referred the student to Bahay Pag-asa in Barangay Sinawal for temporary custody and appropriate intervention. A psychological evaluation was also recommended.
Police said the case is being handled with due consideration for the minor’s age and welfare while authorities determine the appropriate legal action.
Manibog said authorities are continuing their investigation and emphasized that threats made through social media are being taken seriously, particularly when they may cause fear or threaten the safety of students and school personnel.
