MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday underscored the importance of preventive healthcare and sports development, saying the government is investing more in programs that promote healthier lifestyles and reduce the financial burden of illness on Filipino families.
Speaking during his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA), Marcos said good health begins with prevention through complete vaccination, proper nutrition, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful vices and risky behavior.
The President noted that medical expenses continue to strain many households, making disease prevention a key priority of his administration’s public health agenda.
Marcos also announced that government funding for sports has been tripled, describing athletics as an investment not only in international competition but also in the overall health and well-being of Filipinos.
He expressed hope that the international success of Filipino tennis star Alex Eala would inspire more young people to take up tennis and other sports, encouraging greater participation in physical activity among the youth.
The President likewise cited the achievements of the Philippine Women’s National Football Team, saying their accomplishments could help popularize football and encourage more aspiring athletes across the country.
Marcos said promoting sports, healthy living, and physical fitness complements the government’s broader efforts to build a healthier, more productive, and resilient population, particularly among the younger generation.
